Great Danes - Pictures - General Description
Great Danes originated in Germany around 400 years ago. They were meant to hunt a wild boar. Naturally enough the Dane's great size allows some to use the animal as a guard dog. Contrary to some people's conceptions, the Great Dane is not aggressive. It is known as a friendly, sensitive, intelligent dog. It does perfectly well with children and other pets. Note that the Great Dane prefers living indoors, for human companionship is the most enjoyable thing for this creature.
Great Danes are intelligent dogs and combine dignity, strength, and elegance together with their imposing appearance. However, they require a lot of attention and companionship. Great Danes are spirited, courageous, friendly and very dependable. Great Danes can make excellent family pets and is one of the giant working breeds.
According to the AKC standard, the Great Dane should stand around 28-30 inches and weigh approximately 135 pounds. Nevertheless, Great Danes weighing about 170 pounds and more are common though not acceptable by the AKC.
Life Span: 7-10 years.
Coat Color: Great Danes can be brindle, fawn, harlequin, mantle. Great Danes come in many colors. Not all the colors are recognized by the AKC. In order to be recognized by the AKC, the color ought to be pure bred for at least four generations. Among recognized colors of Great Danes are fawn, brindle, harlequin, mantel, and black.
