It is important to be very careful about where you buy Great Danes. A final decision to buy should follow a serious examination of the dog's background, and predisposition to genetic diseases. Visit a number of dog shows and kennels in order to get an idea of what to look for and what to watch out for. Responsible breeders care to share their knowledge on the Great Dane breed, even if they see that it is just a mere interest. They show their dogs with pride and pleasure. Only having seen the sire and the dam of the litter you are able to estimate what the puppies will look like and what potential they are likely to have.

Backyard breeders are mere multipliers who sell their pups to get profit. Responsible breeders strive to breed according to the guidelines of the Great Dane Club. They have a serious breeding program that can make them travel rather far to find a suitable mating partner for their Great Dane.

It is vital for a perspective owner to have information about the health record of the Great Dane's parents. Special attention should be paid to hip dysplasia certificates, as this is a hereditary disease, which can lead to an inability to walk. This disease is typical of some large dog breeds besides Great Danes.

Great Danes Breeders - The ancestors of Great Danes are believed to have originated in Tibet. They were used to manage cattle and helped people hunt. The first drawings of such dogs are dated as far back as the 12th century BC. Bit by bit, the dogs spread across Europe. The Romans are known to have dealt with the ancestors of Great Danes. They used them as war and guard dogs.

In the medieval, the dogs were rather common in Europe. Crosses of Mastiffs with other dogs resulted in the production of the dogs used mainly in hunting. They were often referred to as German Mastiffs. They were good in hunting the wild boar. The dogs had to be strong and endurable. Meanwhile, they had to have a pleasing appearance. As a matter of fact, they were often around the noble and were used to guard the castles of the royalty.

Great Danes Puppies - Great Danes are not the dogs for you if you do not enjoy spending long hours walking accompanied by a merry sensitive creature. It is a giant dog that needs a lot of exercise. Please, think whether you can provide it with enough attention and interaction. Keep in mind that this breed is very sociable. It does not seem to realize how big it is in comparison with other pets. It behaves like a cat sometimes, trying to climb on your lap in search of love.

Little cute puppies usually grow into dogs weighing from 135 to 190 pounds. The CKC recorded once a dog weighing 238 pounds and standing 4.5 inches at shoulder. This fact is likely to impress one who is not ready to supply a dog with a few premium meals a day. Remember that a great-sized dog is not desirable. Do not choose the biggest puppy in the litter since overweight Great Danes are less disease-resistant.

Great Danes - Great Danes are the second tallest of all the dog breeds with the Irish Wolfhound as tallest of them all. The dog has an air of dignity and nobility, but it also loves to romp and play. It's a good idea to begin training early with this dog, when it's still small enough to control! Despite their intimidating size, Great Danes are very gentle and will only show anger when provoked. Though it is a large dog, it should not always be kept outside or in a kennel. The Great Dane much prefers and enjoys the comforts of being indoors where it can be close to its family.

Despite the fact that they are called Danes in English, they did not originate in Denmark. The Great Dane breed of today originated in Germany. There is also some evidence that similar dogs lived in ancient Rome and Greece. It is said that Asiatic people invaded part of Germany in 407 A.D. and introduced a mastiff-like dog. Germans then crossed this dog with the Irish Wolfhound and, some believe, the Mastiff. They were used for such tasks as tracking, watchdog and carting.

Great Danes - For their enormous size and exquisitely regal appearance, Great Danes often are called ‘the Apollo of all dogs. His kind and easy disposition, statuesque standing and noble expression continue to earn him enviable popularity among people of all walks-of-life.

The history of the breed runs back to the times of ancient Egyptians and Assyrians. Archeologists have found many artifacts, dating back to Babylonian times, and there are images of Dane-like dogs on ancient Egyptian buildings, dating from 3000 B. C.
